Automatic Writing: A Simple Way to Connect With Your Inner Voice
Automatic writing has become one of my favourite — and simplest — ways to tap into my inner voice, my higher self.
It’s the thing I come back to during those moments when my soul needs comfort or direction… when I need to remember the light within me that gets clouded when fear or overthinking takes over.
With a little practice, it becomes effortless. It becomes a steady ritual of connection and trust — a way of coming home to yourself when life feels too loud.
How to Start Automatic Writing
Find a quiet place.
Mine is by the bedroom window in my little meditation corner.
Take a few breaths to release the noise and tension of the day.
When you feel your shoulders drop and your mind soften, set an intention.
Call on your guides, your angels, your higher self — whatever feels natural to you.
Think about the issue or feeling that’s been weighing on you, but try not to attach a story to it. Just acknowledge its presence.
Then ask an open question that invites clarity:
What do I need to know about this situation?
How can I see this differently?
How can I feel more at peace?
What am I not seeing?
Now pause… and allow.
Let your hand begin to move.
Don’t censor. Don’t correct. Don’t analyse.
If you feel resistance, breathe and remind yourself:
“I now trust and allow wisdom to flow through me.”
Choosing Your Opening Word or Phrase
I often begin with “Beloved…” — almost like a letter.
It came to me during meditation in a moment when I really needed self-compassion.
“Beloved” feels tender and true for me. A word just for my own inner conversations.
You might choose a different word or phrase — something that feels like unconditional love to you, something that reminds you of the truth of who you are.
Using Automatic Writing With Tarot and Oracle Cards
Automatic writing works beautifully alongside tarot or oracle cards.
You can take one or two words from the card or focus on the imagery and ask:
What does this mean to me?
What does this bring to mind?
Why is this standing out today?
It’s also a powerful tool for creative writing — ideas often tumble out when you stop trying to craft them.
Keep What You Write
Hold onto your pages.
You’ll be surprised by what you read later — the insight, the honesty, the quiet knowing that came through - a knowing you didn't realise you had at the time.
Try It for Yourself
Now it’s your turn to explore this process.
Give yourself space, pick up your pen, and allow your own wisdom to rise to the surface.
The answers really are within you — sometimes they just need a moment of quiet and stillness to speak.
