If Tarot Cards Could Talk 2 : A Simple Way to Read Tarot as a Conversation
Ever feel stuck stringing together multiple cards in a reading? You're not alone. Here’s a gentle, story-based way to start connecting the dots between cards — and discover how your tarot deck can become the best group of chatty storytellers you’ve ever met.

So you've learned to listen to one card at a time — letting it speak, noticing the mood, hearing its message. Magic.
Now what happens when more than one card shows up?
If you're anything like I was, it can feel a little like being dropped into a group chat where everyone's talking at once. 😅 Three cards on the table… three different energies… and you’re sitting there like, “Okay but… what are you all actually trying to say?”
Here’s the thing that changed it all for me:
I stopped trying to make it perfect — and started reading them like a story.
We’re meaning-making creatures. We tell stories about everything — our day, our childhoods, that awkward thing we said in Year 10 that still haunts us. Tarot isn’t all that different. Once I realised the cards weren’t throwing random symbols at me, but characters trying to have a conversation… everything clicked.
Let’s walk through an example together using three cards:
4 of Cups (classic emotional avoidance)
3 of Pentacles (collaboration and learning)
6 of Wands (recognition and success)
Step 1: Listen to the first card
We start with the 4 of Cups. Imagine the character in this card — sitting under a tree, arms crossed, a bit “meh” about everything. Maybe they’re saying:
“Look, I’m tired. I’ve been offered things before and they never turn out the way I hoped. I don’t even know if I want anything right now. Can I just sit here and scroll TikTok in peace?”
Okay. Mood.
Step 2: Invite the next card in
Enter the 3 of Pentacles. This card’s character sees what’s going on and walks over with a clipboard and a coffee. They’re part of a team. They get stuff done. They might say:
“Hey, I hear you. It’s been rough. But you don’t have to do it alone. What if you joined us? We’ve got space for your skills, and you’ll feel better doing something meaningful with people who get it.”
(Or there maybe someone in the group who's not saying anything out loud but could be thinking something and keeping to themselves.)
So now we’ve got a little story forming:
Someone’s emotionally withdrawn → a helping hand arrives → an opportunity to collaborate shows up.
Step 3: Watch the story grow
Now comes the 6 of Wands, striding in with a little sparkle, maybe a cape, a crowd cheering behind them. This one might say:
“Remember when you thought you were stuck? And then you took a chance — joined the team, shared your voice, showed up even when you weren’t sure? Look at you now. You put your energy into something real, and now you’re being seen for it. This is your win. Own it.”
Suddenly, it’s not just three cards.
It’s a narrative arc. A mini-movie.
From emotional burnout → to support → to success.
Reading this way isn’t about being psychic or poetic or perfect. It’s about listening to what the cards say to each other, just like you’d watch characters interact in a silent film or book.
And here’s the best part: there’s no one way to tell the story. You might read these same cards in a different order and hear a totally different message. That’s the beauty of it. Your intuition will lead you to the version your querent (or your own heart) needs to hear.
So next time a spread feels overwhelming, take a breath. Look at the characters. Listen to the conversation. And trust the story that wants to be told.

And hey — if it doesn’t feel smooth at first, that’s okay. Like any good conversation, it gets easier the more you show up. Keep listening, keep experimenting, and let the story unfold in your own way.
Your cards are already speaking — you’re just learning to hear them.
Keep it playful and imaginative. You’ve got this 💫
Happy Tarot Adventures,
May your cards always get along… or at least keep the drama entertaining. 😉

P.S. If you want to give this storytelling method a try, have a look at the main image above; What's the mood of the painting? What interesting conversations are they having? What are they saying to each other and more curiously, to themselves? What's the boy doing through the window? What's the intention of the other characters?
Which one are you?
✧ Just in case you missed it — getting to know a single card like a good friend, hearing what they really have to say — that’s where the story begins.
