What if your tarot cards could talk?
Not just whisper their usual symbols and meanings — but really talk to you. Like a dear old friend who’s walked the path before and has just the right words. Sometimes playful, sometimes wise, sometimes a little sassy... but always exactly what you needed.
This little practice is a playful, heartfelt way to connect with your deck — especially if you’re learning to read, building your intuition, letting go of perfectionism, or simply wanting to add a little sparkle to your daily draw.
And really, it’s a lot like something we already know how to do.
Remember when you were a child and couldn’t read yet — but you’d flip through picture books anyway? You’d make up stories from the images, letting your imagination fill in the blanks. No rules. No pressure. Just feeling your way through the pictures. Just Imagine.
This practice is a bit like that.
A return to story, to intuition, to innocence — to that inner voice that knows how to play and wonder and listen all at once.
Here’s how to invite your cards to speak with a voice all their own…
✦ Step 1: Set the Mood
Start by getting a little cozy. No pressure or elaborate rituals here — just make space that feels soft and open.
A warm drink, candlelight, a deep breath.
Then, shuffle your deck with the tiniest hint of curiosity.
Whisper to yourself (yes, really):
"Okay cards, if you could talk... what would you say to me today?"
✦ Step 2: Pull a Card & Meet the Character
Draw a card like you normally would — but this time, don’t just read it.
Listen.
Imagine the person or scene on the card is alive — ready to tell you their side of the story.
Let’s try one together…

A Story from the Ten of Wands
You pull the Ten of Wands — a figure bent beneath a heavy load, arms full, head down, pushing forward.
Now pause. Imagine he looks up and speaks:
“Phew. Hey there.”
“Yeah, I know. You’re carrying a lot right now — maybe too much. And look, I admire you for holding it all together. Truly. You’re strong. But carrying everything alone? That’s not a badge of honour. That’s burnout in disguise.”
“So be honest with yourself, okay? What are you still holding onto that’s not even yours anymore? What can you set down today, even just for a moment? You don’t have to do it all. And you were never meant to carry the whole world on your back.”
And just like that — the card becomes a conversation. An insight. A gentle truth dressed up like a character in your day.
✦ Step 3: Write Down What You Hear
Open your journal and let the card speak freely.
What can help you tune in:
What’s the overall mood or feeling of the card?
What expression is on the character’s face?
What does their body language tell you?
What are they physically doing in the scene?
From here you can ask:
What’s their personality like?
Are they cheeky, poetic, comforting, no-nonsense?
What story or message are they offering you, right now?
There’s no right way to do this. The goal isn’t accuracy — it’s connection and fun!
Once you get the hang of listening to a single card, you might like to try the next step: letting multiple cards speak together — like characters in a conversation, building a story. (More on that in the next post.)
✦ Step 4: Carry Their Words With You
Let the card’s “voice” become your companion for the day.
Tuck it in your pocket (physically or metaphorically).
Jot their quote down on a sticky note or in your planner.
Whisper it back to yourself when you need a little nudge.
Tarot isn’t just about answers — sometimes, it’s about companionship. And your cards? They’ve got character.
Why This Little Practice Works
Giving your cards a voice helps build intuitive confidence — especially if you sometimes overthink or get stuck in the “am I doing this right?” trap.
It opens a playful doorway between your logical mind and your inner knowing.
And it reminds you that tarot isn’t just about interpretation — it’s about relationship.
The cards become your cast of wise guides, wandering poets, tired dreamers, joyful cheerleaders, and yes — even messengers with a bit of mischief in their smile.
So next time you shuffle, try asking:
“If this card could talk… what would it say to me right now?”
or
"If the character(s) could talk ... what are they saying to themselves? to each other?"
And then? Listen close and don't hold back or edit yourself. You might be surprised by how much your cards have to say — and how naturally your readings begin to flow as they start to feel like old friends.
